Varenyky – A Ukrainian Traditional Dish
It is a dish especially made for special holidays or as a part of a festive table. To cook varenyky, all you should have is good cooking skills and of course a good mood. Here in Ukraine they say you should always be in a good mood when you are cooking dishes.
Varenyky are made from flour, water, salt and filling (cheese, cherries, apples, stewed cabbage, etc.) First of all, you should make a dough from flour, water and salt, then you should put filling inside. Then boil the varenyky in water. Varenyky are served usually with chopped fried lard and sliced onions or with sour cream (with sugar inside).
| Besides this traditional way to cook varenyky, there is one more way to cook them. It’s called “lazy varenyky”, because it’s easier to cook them. You don’t need to put filling inside, you just mix flour with filling and then boil varenyky.
Usually varenyky are served on different celebrations, such as weddings, religious holidays, etc. Varenyky is the traditional dish for Shovetide (Maslenitsa). They say that each Ukrainian host should know how to cook the main Ukrainian dishes: varenyky and borsch. The traditions change through the time, but the cuisine and recipes of traditional dishes are eternal and they will never be gone. |

Kvas – The Ukrainian Summer Drink
|
Ukraine is situated in a zone of mild climate, which makes the temperature in summer rise to 45 degrees Celsius. Hence, people need a way to cool themselves, or they will melt. One way to stay cool is to drink a glass of cold Kvas – one of the most popular drinks here. This drink was first mentioned in the year 989, when Prince Vladimir Sviatoslavich introduced Christianity to the Ukrainians. The first kvas was brewed in abbeys, houses of rich people, and hospitals. Kvas is a popular household drink since it’s recipe is derived from the recipe of making bread. |
Ukrainian Cuisine – Borsch
Ukrainian borsch is one of the most popular and tasty dishes of the Ukrainian cuisine. The real Ukrainian borsch is a homemade borsch. It’s hard to taste really delicious borsch in a restaurant because real borsch should have the home spirit. It is no wonder that borsch is a main dish for Ukrainian lunch. To tell you the truth there is no constant recipe of this dish because the recipe of it depends on the region where you live but each borsch consists of: red beets, any kind of meat (except lamb), onions, carrot, potato, cabbage, parsley, garlic, beans and if you want you can add sour cream before the serving.
